- Teens prefer IM to email:
A survey in the US has shown that teens prefer using IM to email for communicating with friends. A growing number of public libraries in the US are providing IM as an additional channel of communication for their patrons to ask questions, particularly for teens. We’ll have to wait a little while more before IM is introduced at the public libraries in Singapore. I know a couple of institutional libraries are using IM and it seems to be quite popular with the students. (via Librarian In Black)
- In Users’ Bad Books:
The Star newspaper in Malaysia complains about the poorly maintained libraries in Malaysia. It talks about the growing influence of the Internet in meeting the information needs of people. The article also talks about the inability of the library staff to help researchers and academics in looking for the relevant materials. In addition, the library staff are seen as unfriendly. From the article, I glean that though we are more fortunate in terms of our nice libraries and collection, we have to keep on ensuring that we don’t alienate the readers who make use of our libraries by becoming unfriendly or stoogy. It’s also important to ensure that we have the proper collection and if need be, spend money on getting resources that are relevant to improving our Singapore collection at the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library.
