  • A Comic with a Head Librarian as the Main Character:
The synopsis of the comic reads “Rex Libris, Head Librarian at Middleton Public Library, travels to the farthest reaches of the galaxy in search of overdue books. He must confront powerful alien warlords who refuse to pay their late fees. Wearing his super thick bottle glasses, and armed with weapons, he strikes fear into recalcitrant borrowers, and can take on virtually any foe from zombies to renegade literary character!” I’ll be ordering a copy from my regular comic book store soon as it looks like a really interesting comic book and very different from the normal superhero stories. • Stump the Librarian:
“Stump the Librarian” is a regular newspaper column in The Sun in San Bernardino, California. It is sorta of like the “Question of the Day” at the reference counters at the 3 regional libraries. Seems like a good way to get ‘free’ publicity for the advisory and enquiry services of the Adults & Young People’s Services. (via LISNews.com)
  • Internet Gets Questions Answered:
Another ‘advert’ in a community newspaper for the reference services at Springfield-Greene County Library. In this article, the librarians highlights how they would answer reference questions before the Internet became the norm and how they would do it now. A short article, but an interesting read. • Australia’s Books Alive Literacy Initiative:
Australia launched a nationwide reading initiative, Books Alive, last week. The purpose “is to encourage Australians to experience the joys of reading”. ‘The Great Reads Guide’ has a listing of 50 books written by Australian and overseas authors and is available at all bookshops across Australia. The list will also be published in the August 2005 issue of Australian Women’s Weekly. In addition, a specially commissioned book, Hell’s Island by Matthew Reilly, will be given free for each purchase of the books listed in the guide. Singapore’s very own READ Singapore reading initiative come to a close last Saturday. (via LISNews.com)
  • DeweyBrowser:
It’s not really a browser as in Internet Explorer or Firefox, but a visual interface for you to browse resources based on subject headings and DDC numbers. It’s really cool and you need to try it to see how fun it is. Maybe we can include this feature into our new OPAC system. (via LibrarianInBlack.net)
  • Success is spelled r-e-a-d-i-n-g:
Plans for a reading initiative in Quebec, Canada to encourage students to read as they found that girls did better at school than boys because girls are more assiduous readers. The Quebec education department would also be spending C$60 million (about S$82 million) over the next three years to improve the school libraries in the state. (via LISNews.com)
