  • Public libraries to tackle unpaid fines
The Ottawa Public Library has hired a collection agency to collect US$3 million in unpaid fines owed by patrons. Thankfully for Singaporeans, our public libraries have not gone to the extent of getting collection agencies to recover unpaid fines. However, the public library has sent out a mailer reminding people about the fines they have in their accounts and urging them to pay up.

  • Library will be first to offer downloadable films, concert videos
The Denver Public Library will be the first in the US to provide a service which allows its patrons to download movies and concert videos from the comfort of their homes. This is an extension of their online service which presently provides free downloads of audio books and ebooks. The patrons are also able to listen to streaming audio of classical music, jazz, blues, country and they even have the choice to purchase the song from the vendor if they want to own it. An off-shoot of this is that the library’s website has become a community place where members can contribute movie reviews or send in movie recommendations to the librarians. This might be something we might want to have a look at as more and more people are going online for their information and entertainment needs. Instead of making them come to the library, we can go to them with the use of technology.

Have yet to do mine, but you’re free to help her out and submit your answers. I might get meet up with her on my upcoming trip down under.
