  • The Future of IM
This is a Dig_Ref listserv discussion on the how libraries can integrate IM (instant messaging) on a large scale into their reference services. Quite a number of points that we can take away if we do decide on providing IM reference services.

  • “Ask-a-Librarian” in Afghanistan and Iraq
An interesting look at how libraries in the U.S. Army provide support to troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. Through the “Ask-a-Librarian” service, U.S. army personnel can submit enquiries any time of the day through the web and a librarian will provide a direct answer or pair the enquirer with a subject expert. They are able to provide 24 hours service because U.S. Army bases are located around the world. What’s interesting is that the librarians have “compile(d) a digital knowledge base from their answers, which helps them to efficiently answer recurring questions.
