- Pages from Chinese Books Disappearing in Vancouver
I guess the problem of cut and missing pages from books is not limited to Singapore. The Vancouver and Richmond Public Libraries in Canada seems be having the problem of missing pages in Chinese-language books and magazines. Even display of damaged books to highlight the problem was not spared by the vandalism when the majority of the books were taken by the public.
(via LISNews) - Google Jockeys For Conference Sessions
Quite an interesting concept to use for library workshops to teach students and the public about internet search skills. The basic idea of a Google Jockey is to get a student from the class to do a search for materials through Google on the topic/keywords that is being discussed during class. Then the student can share it with the rest of the class. Another way would be during conferences, which is what the next Masie Center Learning2006 will be trying out. But I feel that it might be a tad distracting looking at the projector for the search results, the slides and listening to the speaker.

Hi Isaak
Why do people steal pages from books? Is this just another a way of stealing the book? It’s very sad to think that people would do that!
Hi CW,
Exactly!!! I really wonder why people cut or tear pages out of the books and magazines. In our bigger libraries, we have photocopying services which allows the public to photocopy the pages they want. They can even choose to have it photocopied in colour! But unfortunately, some people still choose to cut pages out of the books and magazines.
And the best part was after posting this post, my colleagues received 16 cookery books that had multiple missing pages returned by the same reader. Some like had a third of the pages missing and what’s worse was that some of the books were new ones.
It’s really so sad. On one hand, we want to provide the latest and best books to our readers. On the other hand, we have these book vandals cutting the pages or just plain stealing the books out of the library. Sigh

P.S.: We are most likely to go to Perth during the Click06 period. My wife has submitted her registration for the conference and waiting for a reply. So, hopefully, we’ll get to meet up then.
