- Pearl’s Pick
Somehow I missed this when it was first highlighted on LISNews earlier in the week. Saw this on ricklibrarian today and thought it would be good to highlight what the world famous librarian, Nancy Pearl, is recommending to her patrons of the Kings County Library System. There are also short reviews of the books recommended. Pearl’s Pick will be updated twice a month. Patrons of the Kings County Library System can also make reservations from the list as there is a link next to each of the book reviews. I find this quite innovative and maybe NLB should try to integrate this into our online reviews on our corporate website and blogs. This would make it much easier for our patrons to make a reservation if the review interests them enough to want to read the book.
(via ricklibrarian) - Google News Archive Search
An interesting new service from Google that aggregates content from both mainstream media and traditional library database aggregators. Here’s the list of the initial participants: The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time, Guardian Unlimited, Factiva, Lexis-Nexis, HighBeam Research and Thomson Gale (AccessMyLibrary.com). This is not something new as the participants are currently offering them on their individual websites or their database products for a fee. However, this is the first time that someone can search all in a consolidated fashion through the familiar Google search. Do note that though the search is free, viewing the articles might involve a fee. But this new service is good as it searches goes as far back as 200 years.
