Isaak’s Links - Privatizing Library Management and Others - 8 September 2006

  • Board Acts to Privatize Library
In a highly controversial decision, the Jackson-Madison County Library Board has decided to go ahead to enter contract negotiations with a private library management firm, Library System and Services LLC. However, there are many legal issues surrounding this decision as there is a court case currently on not allowing privatization. Am just curious if this is the way forward for public libraries. Will there be any impact on staff numbers ? Will library services be affected given the increased need to cut costs or increase revenue?

  • Study Aims to Improve Internet Literacy
Researchers from two universities are trying to find a proven method of improving internet literacy skills in disadvantaged students. The new method will teach the students how to search, read, understand and evaluate online information as the researchers have found that fewer than ten percent of the study’s participants actually evaluate their internet information for accuracy. The study found that internet literacy requires a different skill set as compared to traditional literacy skills.

  • aNobii
A Hong Kong social network web service for book lovers. Anobii provides a space members to submit book reviews, recommendations, tags, and wish lists. You can also add friends to your group, just like Friendster. You can swap, trade or lend your books with others. What’s impressive is that it has a wide selection of books in its database comprising both English and Chinese books. Might be a good place to go find out what’s popular in the Asian context, particularly for Chinese books as Amazon doesn’t have them.
