• Librarians stake their future on open source
Librarians from the Georgia Public Library Service has developed an open source library management system, Evergreen, that is been used to manage 252 member libraries in the state of Georgia. What particularly impressed me wasn’t so much that the entire system was built in-house, but the many features that are available for librarians and patrons to interact and use. Features such as the ability to add additional content like book covers, reviews and excerpts into the catalogue. Another feature I liked was the ability for patrons to create ‘bookbags’ of books they would like to read or have read and can choose to share it with their friends via a RSS feed or a regular web page.

  • The Long Blondes
Regarded as one of the hottest bands in the UK right now, The Long Blondes have come quite a long way since their days as librarians. Actually, of the quintet, only one has never been a librarian. Here’s another story of them on Guardian Online. Hmmmm … maybe NLB’s in-house band might look into going professional. You can catch the NLB Band in action when they have either Open Mic or Staff Jam at the library@esplanade.
