Graphic Novels and Libraries

Graphic novels and libraries have not always been that closely interlinked together … and I don’t mean cartoon books such as Baby Blues, Calvin and Hobbes, and Far Side Gallery which the public libraries in Singapore had always have. Graphic novels only came into the picture when library@orchard was opened in 1999 when it became the first public library in Singapore to carry comic graphic novels, featuring Superman, Batman and Spiderman amongst the many other superheroes and characters. Manga comics were also included into the collection. Other public libraries started offering graphic novels to their readers and it has been very well received. I remember on the first day that Jurong Regional Library was re-opened after major renovations, not a single copy of graphic novel was on the shelves. This shows the tremendous attraction of graphic novels to our readers.

Graphic novels have definitely gained quite a foothold in libraries the world over. So much so that this year’s New York Comic Con in February 2007 would be conducting panels just for librarians. Go on over here to have a look at the wonderful panels and discussions that would held on 23 February with free admission for librarians. I believe it’s the first time any comic con has established a day of sessions specifically for librarians. (via LISNews)
