Reluctant Reader Turned Renowned Author
You would always associate authors with the love of reading. However, in the case of Beverly Bunn, it was the exact opposite. She didn’t like to read and was assigned to the ‘blackbird’ reading group, the lowest in that first grade in Portland, Oregon. At the end of the first year, she was given a probationary promotion to second grade and her mother made her promise not to tell anyone.
One day in third grade, she discovered “The Dutch Twins” and it piqued her interest in reading. And she has kept reading since that day.
She would grow up to become a librarian and she read books to children during story time. And in 1950, she wrote her first book, Henry Huggins. By now, she was known as Mrs Beverly Cleary.
She’s now 90 years old and is regarded as one of the most beloved children’s authors of all time.
You can read more about her in Tuscon Citizen and her own website. She has also inspired the Drop Everything And Read Day (D.E.A.R.), which is held annually on April 12 (Beverly Cleary’s birthday).
