Bedtime Stories and Storytelling to Children

Came across this Guardian Unlimited article on parents in the UK having problems reading bedtime stories to their children. It was quite shocking to see that 1 in 10 parents have problems understanding the bedtime stories that they read to their children and amongst them, almost a quarter of them choose to skip passages they can’t read or invent their own words. But what was heartening is the big percentage (73%) of them preferring reading stories than, say, going to the park or watching TV.

And on the other side of the world in Australia, the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) is launching a “National Simultaneous Storytime 2007” (NSS 2007). Through this event, they hope to

  • promote the value of reading and harmony
  • promote the value of books
  • promote an Australian writer and publisher, and
  • promote storytime activities in public libraries and communities around the country
The event will held on 6 September 2007 at 11.00am (AEST) and the book to be read is Australian author Mem Fox’s The Magic Hat. NSS was first held in 2001.

And those who are lucky enough to live in the middle of nowhere, can come to see the ADHD librarian reading for National Simultaneous Storytime.

Well, I would love to go to the middle of nowhere to hear you tell the story. :)
