QQ’Librarian did this short quiz on Pew Internet Project on “Typology of Information and Communication Technology Users”. And here are my results:

Where do you fit?

Your Results

Based on your answers to the questionnaire, you most closely resemble survey respondents within the Omnivores typology group. This does not mean that you necessarily fit every group characteristic.

Omnivores make up 8% of the American public.

Basic Description
Members of this group use their extensive suite of technology tools to do an enormous range of things online, on the go, and with their cell phones. Omnivores are highly engaged with video online and digital content. Between blogging, maintaining their Web pages, remixing digital content, or posting their creations to their websites, they are creative participants in cyberspace.

Defining Characteristics
You might see them watching video on an iPod. They might talk about their video games or their participation in virtual worlds the way their parents talked about their favorite TV episode a generation ago. Much of this chatter will take place via instant messages, texting on a cell phone, or on personal blogs. Omnivores are particularly active in dealing with video content. Most have video or digital cameras, and most have tried watching TV on a non-television device, such as a laptop or a cell phone.

Omnivores embrace all this connectivity, feeling confident in how they manage information and their many devices. This puts information technology at the center of how they express themselves, do their jobs, and connect to their friends.

Who They Are
They are young, ethnically diverse, and mostly male (70%). The median age is 28; just more than half of them are under age 30, versus one in five in the general population. Over half are white (64%) and 11% are black (compared to 12% in the general population). English-speaking Hispanics make up 18% of this group. Perhaps unsurprisingly, many (42% versus the 13% average) of Omnivores are students.

Hmmm … I must say that the result is quite true about the use of technology tools, but I think I’m much older than 28 and am definitely not white. And I finished my degree course about 10 years ago.

When I first saw the title on LISNews, I was intrigued. Are there really certain habits that librarians can adopt to make us more effective?

In his essay for The Chronicle of Higher Education this week, Todd Gilman shares with us his “Four Habits of Highly Effective Librarians”. Though his essay is geared more towards academic librarians, I feel that the four habits are applicable to all librarians, whether they are in public or corporate libraries.

The four behaviors that Gilman suggests adopting to be more effective in our workplace are:

openess,

responsiveness,

collaboration, and

communication

Here’s ACRLog’s summary of what each behavior means
One who is open to new ideas and is open to sharing them and listening to those of others - and as Gilman suggests - is open to accepting change. One who is responsive to new ideas and is willing to give them a try - and who responds to co-workers when asked for input and participation. One who is willing to collaborate internally and externally with co-workers and fellow educators and academic support professionals to accomplish shared objectives. One who pays attention to the need to share information and communicate it to fellow librarians. I think most of us would like our colleagues to internalize these behaviors, and we should try to do so ourselves.

FYI, Todd Gilman is the librarian for literature in English at Yale University’s Sterling Memorial Library.

You must be wondering how come I’m writing a welcome message when I’ve got quite a few posts done.

Well, it’s to welcome all new visitors to this blog as well as those who are coming from my old URL. The content has been ported over from the previous one and nothing much has changed except for the new URL.

I’ll try to update the blog as often as I can. Hope you’ll stick around and see how the library world develops together.

Went to see the GP after discovering spots on my body and it’s confirmed that I’ve got chicken pox. Will be stuck at home for next couple of weeks and home alone as well because am afraid the son will get it. Can’t imagine when the pox dry up as it’s already a little itchy as I’ve read that it’ll be extremely itchy when it dries up.

It’ll be a good time to get a good rest. But I’ll be missing all the Christmas parties.
